Become a Licensed Security Professional
Follow our step-by-step guide to obtaining your security guard license and permits.
Basic Eligibility
Meet these foundational requirements before you begin.
- You must be 18+ years old.
- You must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- You must clear a criminal background check (Live Scan → DOJ & FBI).
Mandatory Training
Complete the required initial and ongoing training courses.
- 8 hours of "Power to Arrest" training (mandatory, before applying for a guard card).
- An additional 32 hours of training (within the first 6 months).
- 8 hours of yearly training (to keep your license active).
Application Process
Submit your application and fingerprints to the state bureau.
- After completing the 8-hour course, get your Live Scan fingerprinting done.
- Submit the application online or by mail (BSIS portal → fee is around $55).
- Once approved, you will receive your official Guard Card.
Armed Guard Permit
Follow these extra steps if you wish to be an armed guard.
- Requires a Guard Card plus additional firearm training.
- You must be 21+ years old.
- A BSIS-approved course (14+ hours including a written exam and range test).
- The application fee is approximately $100.
License & Permit Renewal
Keep your licenses active by renewing them on time.
- The Guard Card must be renewed every 2 years.
- The Firearm Permit must be renewed every 2 years, plus 4 range qualifications per year.
Other Permits
Obtain separate permits for additional tools and equipment.
- Separate training and permits are required for batons, pepper spray, and additional firearm calibers.
